Verne McKinney Elementary

The Other Side of Basketball began working with Verne McKinney Elementary (a title 1 school located in Hillsboro, Oregon) in the fall of 2015. What started as a fateful encounter between an elementary school teacher and TOSOB executive director, Lamar Hurd, in a local-area Starbucks has now turned into once-per-week basketball training sessions which are supplemented by surprise events and field trips.

TOSOB provides Verne McKinney Elementary students with fun and challenging basketball drills & games, but what is of greater significance in this program are the life lessons and experiences that our organization is able to offer the students. TOSOB was able to host the elementary students at an Oregon State University (OSU) basketball game at the Moda Center in the winter of 2015, and also take the students on a field trip to OSU in the spring of 2016. Once on the Corvallis campus, the elementary students received a tour and were able to meet and hear from university athletic administration and student-athletes, while also getting to have some fun inside of the sports stadiums and arenas.

Verne McKinney is severely limited with resources, as are many of its students. TOSOB is planning to continue working with the school, with the hope of providing more opportunities for its kids, while also increasing the number of kids who are able to be impacted.
